The island of Vulcano is the furthest south of the Aeolian archipelago. Lipari is just 1 nautical mile to the north. On the Sicilian mainland the closest towns are Portorosa (15 nm to the south), Milazzo (16 nm to the southeast), and Sant'Agata di Militello (25 nm to the southwest).
The Island of Vulcano is the source of the word "volcano" in English. This island has numerous features of secondary volcanism and is an important stop during your boat tour of the Aeolian Islands. It is a green island with clear water and bubbling springs, mud baths, black sand, and health spas. Archeological ruins have not been found on this island, and the historical documents on Vulcano tell stories of a violent and explosive volcano.
The last eruption was in 1888. The predominant feature is a cone volcano, Gran Cratere. Volcano has a small, secure port in a protected Bay, also good for anchorage. Within walking distance from the port are restaurants, stores, the trail up the Gran Cratere, mud baths, black sand beaches, and bubbling hot water springs.
